Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWT’S) are a type of wind turbine where the main rotor shaft is set transverse to the wind, with the generator being located at the base of the turbine. They are sometimes known as Transverse Axis Wind Turbines (TAWT’s) or Cross-Flow Wind Turbines (CFWT’s). The main benefit of fitting a VAWT is that they are omnidirectional and therefore do not have to track the wind. Operation maintenance is usually simpler and more efficient as the generator is at the base of the turbine. VAWTS can operate in conditions unsuitable for HAWT’s.
